Fw190D unknown camouflage???
I have a problem with the basic camouflage of this captured Fw190D in Soviet markings. In VVS service for the first time only some area was overpainted and those are of the national insignia and in this case cockpit canopy frame and elevon. Later planes was completely taken in to the Soviet official camouflage.

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
There is a color side view of an Fw 190D-9 on the back cover and an Fw 190A on page 159 of the book Red Stars 2 by Geust and Petrov.
I will not even venture a guess as to the colors used since they seem too dull to me. This is either accurate or grossly not so. I can't tell. Perhaps the owner of a copy can enlighten you further. Ed |

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
Here it is larger image. Plane is faded and dirt. As there could be noted only some areas were overpainted. Problem is also weather condition and plane look some darker while the photo os sharp enough. I have compare this plane with all of the available pattern for Fw190 D I could found and many of areas simply did not match to any pattern. This plane for sure have two color on top side and this colors could be RLM 81 and 82. I also compared with pattern with RLM 82 and 75 on topside and withoud result. This plane was captured by the end of war at the plant in Marenburg. At the end of war many of camouflage improvisation were made- is this one of this?

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
Hello
I may just add that the upper camouflage colours could be RLM82 and RLM83. It depends of the construction batch of the aircraft by Focke Wulf . Was it a very early machine and the upper surfaces colours could be RLM75/RLM83. We have confirmation, with wrecks (at least 2 machines) , and it is described in our book that from machine W.Nr 210102 RLM82 and RLM83 were used for uppersurfaces camouflage scheme . This phot is very interesting indeed. ALl the best Eric Larger |

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
Thank you Eric. This machine had overpainted Wereke Numer but first digits are 21 and last visible is 1. Any idea? I accept your suggestion that this could be 83/83 combination but what about the same geometry of the color?

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
This machine could be W.Nr 210251 . if so it was an "old" machine , probably sent to Marienburg for maintenance or repair . A repaired rectangle be observed on starboard horizontal tail plane .
The ailerons have been changed , and are perhaps still in red primer or in one of RLM 76 vairants . Eric |

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
There is three photos of this plane and in this way it could be that the fuselage is 81/83 and the wings and taillane in 82/83
Now we have a bingo

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
Too be honest, although I cannot discern a clear pattern, what I can see doesn't seem to match your illustration.

Re: Fw190D unknown camouflage???
This picture was taken in Russia ,look at the concrete taxiway . And it is probable that repaint has been done on this aircrafts by new owners
In any way it is wa very nice photo. The camouflage is close to the one we described in our book concerning one machine captured in Mareinburg . Eric |
