Question Fw 190 expert question

Found this in my files while looking for information on the R4M and Panzerblitz.

They were to be mounted as standard on the aircraft listed. What was an Fw 190 F-16 or an Fw 190 D-15? Typo or something on the drawing board?

Re: Fw 190 expert question

I am no expert, but "Leistungvergleich Fw 190" dated 3.1.45 lists the Fw 190 D-15 as being a version powered by a DB 603E armed with 4 MG 151. I believe in some similar documents, there was reference to the F-16, but they are temporarily lost in a pile of other documents right now. The last production data I have is for March 1945 and the sub-types produced were:A9, D9, D9 EZ42, D11, D11EZ42,D13. There was no sub-type breakdown for the 384 "Schlacht" Fw 190s that month. Whoops found a document for the Fw 190 F-16: "Entwicklungs-Mitteilung Fw 190" dated 28.12.43. The F-16 was similar to the F-8/F-9 with BMW TS or TH and a number of detail changes.

Re: Fw 190 expert question

Hi Modeldad,

Interesting stuff. I was unaware of the Fw 190 F-16 and D-15, but managed to find some info in the secondary sources listed below.

The F-16 was a planned variant with:
  • a BMW 801 TH engine
  • an FuG 15 radio
  • larger wheels (as introduced on the F-15)
  • an ETC 504 fuselage rack
  • wing racks (either four ETC 71 or two ETC 503)
The F-16/R5 was planned to have two 55-liter tanks incorporated into the wings. The F-16/R14 was intended to carry a torpedo. Later developments were to include the larger Ta 152 tail.
There were two prototypes, namely V66 (WNr. 584002) and V67 (WNr. 930516.) Production was supposed to start at NDW in April 1945, but none were completed.

Sources:
  • "Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Volume 3 1944-1945" by Robert Smith and Eddie Creek, Classic Pubs, 2013, ISBN 9781906537319
See pages 994 and 1000 for details on the prototypes and variant specs, respectively.
  • "Flugzeug Classic Extra Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Teil 6: A-9, F-9 und D-Prototyp" by Dietmar Hermann, Geramond, 2022, ISBN 9783964536297
See pages 39-41. Contains much the same info as Smith & Creek Vol. 3, but each has some additional details.
  • "Model Fan Encyclopedia #3: Focke Wulf Fw 190" by Robert Michulec, AjaKS, 2001, ISBN 8391452123
See sheets 42 and 43 for drawings of the F-16/R5 and F-16/R14. The latter has a 4-bladed prop and Ta 152-style tail.
(The same drawings also appear in "Airframe & Miniature #7: The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Radial-Engine Versions" by Franks, 2019)

The D-15 was the last planned Dora variant. It was to be powered by a DB 603 E, with MG 151s and MK 108s in the wings, but no fuselage armament. It was an interim series, intended to avoid disrupting production of the D-12. For more details, see pages 174-187 in:
  • "Focke-Wulf Fw 190 'Long Nose': An Illustrated History of the Fw 190 D Series" by Dietmar Hermann, Schiffer, 2003, ISBN 0764318764

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Leon Venter

The most comprehensive known to me source on the Fw 190 D-15 and D-14 are pages 438-452 of 'Focke-Wulf Fw 190D camouflage & markings, Part II' by Deboeck, Larger & Poruba.

Hi Maciej,

Yes, indeed -- a very detailed description of the Luftwaffe's situation and reasoning, the available and planned engines, and the D-14 and D-15 variants of the Dora.

Thanks for the pointer!
