Re: Typhoon losses 01/07/1943
Alain and/or Wim,
Is there additional info about two more Typhoons of 3 Squadron lost on 1 July 1943 during same mission? They were EJ970 with Sgt F. Lawrence (POW) and DN589 with P/O C.G. Benjamin (KIA, RAAF, buried in Rotterdam). Apparently also victims of Fw-190s. Regards, Leendert |

Re: Spitfire lost 5km N-W Ostend 01/07/1943
Yes, there are more details about the other two Typhoons which were lost that day and on that mission.
DN 589 was hit at 12.05 hours by Lt. Georg Schott at approx. 25 km west of Hoek van Holland. The pilot, Plt.Off. Colin George Benjamin died and his body was recovered from the sea by the German minesweeper M425 and brought on land in Rotterdam. He was buried at the General cemetery Crooswijk in that city. The third one, Sgt. Lawrence was taken pow and spent his time from that time in Stalag Luft 3 Sagan |
