Do18 of 1./KuFlGr.406 20Oct40

New Zealand Maurice Baird in a 248 Blenheim engaged Do 18 at 0900hrs which reportedly ditched near Utsire. I've described it as being attacked fro astern.

Does any one have the crew names or any other info.

Is there a know reason why they were four men aboard this Blenheim ? It is rather unusual in operation.

As I edit Heroes of Coastal Command for Pen & Sword to-day had a mail after I asked the question to Burton's daughter.

He had arrived on the 19 October for duty with 248, and wanted to gain experience he shard a tent with Baird who offered his a trip and gave him a chance to orientate himself with the landscape. Copcutt, Bairds normal observer unfortunately paid with his life.

Re: Do18 of 1./KuFlGr.406 20Oct40

Dear all,

It is indeed rather unusual that a Blenheim had a 4 man crew in an operational sortie!

I've checked the ORB and Sgt Burton isn't amongst the crew listings on previous sorties. So I guess he may have been an extra observer or perhaps a war correspondent or photographer...

Regards,
Hans
