Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer

I was wondering if someone can give me some more information on Erich Etienne. About 25-30 years ago, I purchased from a US vet a Honor Goblet that was presented to Mr. Etienne's family after his plane was shot down over Norway while returning from a polar exploration. The inscription in the Goblet reads: Wetterdienstassessor ERICH ETIENNE AM 18 10 42.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer

He was a German Geophysicist, Pilot and Exployer. I never saw his nazi party papers, but I am assuming that since he was a pilot of the luftwaffe and received after his death the 2nd highest decoration just under the Knights Cross, he was definately an important figure in the German movement. BTW..I think he was flying a HE 111 (equipped with skis) when his plane was shot down. From my research, only one other was killed in the crash.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer

Luft GQM report dated 26-7-1942 has - 23-7-1942 Ff Oblt Heinz Wagner, B Dr.Erich Etienne and Bf Uffz Heinrich Voss all mising changed to killed. The Wekusta book also states Obslt.Vollrath Wibel as killed in crash, a listing ''Deutsche Flieger unter dem Nordlich'' gives Etienne as b 24.02-1915 and that he is buried at Botn-Rognan Block B Grave 1001 (Wagner 1004, Voss 1003 ).

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer

I stand corrected on one issue..Erich Etienne did not use a HE-111 but a HE-115 S4+BK which does have skis. I can send u a pic if needed.
As far as the Nazi issue..I said I was NOT sure but assumed that he was a member of the Nazi party. Thousands upon thousands of Germens were card holding members. Don't ever assume that just because they were a member of the Nazi party that they had any part with the killing of the Jews. You are totally wrong on that point..sorry!

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer

Surely you mean a He 115 with floats as opposed to skis?
