Re: Adjutant and Major beim Stab
Hello Chris,
I don't have any official descriptions from a Luftwaffe Dienstvorschrift (I hope someone has), but from what I know/see is that the Adjudant of a Gruppenkommandeur or Geschwaderkommodore was the direct assistent of these, often but not always flying missions too. The Major beim Stabe was often an older officer who acted as a liaison and father figure, but rarely on operations. By absence of the Gruppenkommandeur the Major beim Stabe could act as his deputy, even signing Namentliche Verlustmeldungen. So he can be regarded as a senior assistant, taking care of many administrative tasks. That's what I understand from the practice with the I./NJG 1 in Venlo but I do welcome any more precise task descriptions from an official source. There must be reference works in which more expert authors describe these functions I guess. Best regards, Marcel

Re: Adjutant and Major beim Stab
My uncle was Major beim Stabe with JG 27 in Africa and with JG 53 in Italy. He performed different functions, among them being 'Abschussoffizier'(officer concerned with submitting claims for victories), flying missions with the unit and mentoring younger members of the unit. He also flew countless ferry flights with other officers to various meetings.
