Willi Maximowitz opponents on 23 March 1944

Hello,

Here's an extract from "Luftwaffe Over Germany - Defense of the Reich" by Donald Caldwell (as part of his excellent duo of books on the subject) :

"Uffz. Willi Maximowitz was being chased through the Pulk by a 55th Fighter Group P-38 and decided to ram a B-17. He raised his right wing and clipped 1.5 meters (5 ft.) off the left horizontal stabilizer of his target with his own left wing, which sheared off. Maximowitz then bailed out with little trouble. He was credited with a Rammabschuss (ramming shoot-down) and was allowed to paint a coveted skull-and-crossbones on his rudder to celebrate it, but the B-17 returned to England without much difficulty."

Is that familiar to someone ? Someone know the identity of the B-17 rammed or/and of the P-38 pilot ?

Regards

Alfred

Hi Alfred

According to Neil Page the bomber belonged to the 92nd BG, USAAF:

Unfortunately, there is not much more that I can add.

Horrido!

Thanks, that's already that

I still hope that unpublished manuscript by Barry Smith will become a book someday.
