Re: Death of Fedor von Bock: RAF Unit?

Gentlemen:

Thank you very much for your very informative responses. It seems that knowing the time when von Bock was strafed on 3 May would be helpful. It would shrink the size of the haystack where the needle is buried! That said, fixing a reliable time may be difficult after 72 years, with all the first hand participants having passed away.

Cheers

Re: Death of Fedor von Bock: RAF Unit?

Hi Don,

from the information provided by Horst and Carsten, the one 2 TAF entry relating to the area (Lensahn) where von Bock was injured, is:

6 x Tempests from 486 Sqn/122 Wg, 05.50 - 10.14 hrs, 9 MET destroyed, 22 MET damaged, Neustadt Bay - Eckenford - Hamburg. MET NW N.6927 to O.0535)

Grid reference rO.0535 is slightly north of Lensahn, at roughly 54 16 05 N, 10 52 33 E.

The entry from the 486 Sqn ORB shows:

Six Tempests on an Armed Recce mission, 07.15 - 08.15 hrs, Armed Recce Neustadte Busche - Heiligen - Eckernford - Hamburg. Scattered MET in the area N6927 and north of area O.0535, strafed. Claims: MET 9-22: Ammo. expended 2100 x 20 m.m.

Thus, the ORB indicates that strafing occurred in the Oldenburg in Holstein area.

Cheers

Rod

PS - a quick check of the website referred to by Horst shows a picture of the manson where the von Bock family reputedly stayed before setting out on the morning of 3 May. The picture shows the Petersdorf Gatshaus, situated at 54 14 6.66 N, 10 52 4.28 E.

Hi Rod:

Very nice work! It does seem that the haystack is shrinking to a manageable size.

And good to see an Antipodean link emerging, via 486 Squadron.

Thank you.

Re: Death of Fedor von Bock: RAF Unit?

Colleagues:

As discussed much earlier in this thread, a comparison of 2 TAF Operational Record Books and Fedor von Bock's movements on 3 May 1945 suggests that 486 (New Zealand) Squadron was responsible for his death.

Having far too much time on my hands, I have written up (i) a summary of the analysis and (ii) a detailed tabulation of the key information in the ORBs. They are available at: https://dr-don-writes.com/category/military-history/

Cheers
