Re: Kriegsberichter Loss in 1941

Many thanks gentlemen especially Matti for all your help . I was just going over some notes I took many years ago on one of my visits to the Irish Army Military Archives . Now I can put a name to the file I viewed there and am glad to see that this body was named .
By any chance does anybody know how the He 111 was lost , thanks.

Re: Kriegsberichter Loss in 1941

For what it is worth, NA HW13/97 has the following entry:

Night 20-21.10.41
Luftflotte 3

III./KG 40: 8 aircraft up before 1730 and operating up to 2115. LANDS END to CARMSOLE POINT. 1 a/c made brief landfall at RULLION, 1 a/c may have been destroyed by 2 Hurricanes west of SCILLY ISLES at 1640.

Hope this helps

Adam

Adam I think that Carmsole Point mentioned in your post should read Carnsore Point in Co Wexford.

Chris, the bodies of Meier and Ehrmann landing on the Irish Coast is some distance from the Scillies area bearing in mind sea drift, which was why I was trying to determine time frames.

Re: Kriegsberichter Loss in 1941

Thanks Tony for the clarification - my copy is a bit hard to read in places.

As an aside, there is an entry for the 19th that notes three unidentified aircraft of Fl.Fü Atlantik - Gruppe 406 took off at 1500 on ASR duties. Milford Haven - St George's Channel area. Bombed and sank Norwegian SS Rask 6m south of Tuskar Rock. Time of attack is listed as 1830 and return was between 2000-2100.

He 115 8L+BH (3246) was damaged by flak and Uffz Johanne Schelschorn (Bf) was KIA in Pl.Qu. 7387 and could be a candidate as a victim of the Rask's defensive armament IF I've interpreted the location correctly - and that's a big if....

Re: Kriegsberichter Loss in 1941

Thanks for that Adam, the coastwatchers in the Look Out Post (LOP) Carnsore Point observed two Heinkels attacking the Rask from 18.30 hrs (Irish Time). I wonder were the HeII5's misidentified as He111's and were involved in the attack on the Rask?

Re: Kriegsberichter Loss in 1941

According to the Admiralty War Diary the RASK was bombed and sunk by three He115 12 nm southeast of Tuskar Rock at 1930A/19 Oct 1941. The ship was armed with five machine guns and claimed to have hit two of the attackers.
