I am intrigued by a commonly published photo of four KG55 He111Ps flying in formation and wearing a night camouflage scheme consisting of black undersides and dark patches over heavily worn lighter areas (RLM77 perhaps?) on the upper surfaces. The photo in question appears in Smith & Creek's "Kampfleiger Vol 2" on page 179, as well as in de Zeng & Stankey's "Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe Vol 1" on pg 201. Despite the photo's clarity, it leaves me with many questions!
I have seen the fuselage codes interpreted as either black or red, both with a white outline and diagonal white lines through the middle. Is there any consensus as to the proper color? The staffel is not identified in the photos, and I'm assuming it may not be known. Also, would the color of the spinners necessarily match the fuselage codes? Sorry if these questions are grasping at straws - I'm aiming for the most accurate interpretation possible for a model I'm doing.
Thanks in advance,
Ian (Boise, Idaho)
