19th December 1944, RN air crash ?
Hello
Am seeking details of a RN air crash on the 19th December 1944. 849 Sqdn , which were using Avengers around this date from HMS Victorious and/or Katukurunda, Ceylon( Sri Lanka). At least one Naval Airman reported as MPK. Thanks Alex |

Avenger II JZ414: pilot misjudged landing on HMS Victorious Dec 19, 1944, deck landing control officer killed by aircraft's port wingtip and aircraft went over side into sea. Both crew members injured but rescued by HMS Rapid.
Source: http://www.joebaugher.com/navy_seria...rdseries3.html The same site has on other pages three FAA Corsairs written off in landing mishaps on the Victorious and Formidable this same day. A bad day for the Fleet Air Arm. |

Re: 19th December 1944, RN air crash ?
Dorman was the LSO and the two Avenger crewmen were SubLts. No doubt baugher's information was a straight copy from Ray Sturtivant's book, without credit.

Re: 19th December 1944, RN air crash ?
Thank you both. Am annoyed with myself as I have searched through the Avenger section in the book but overlooked the name - looked only at the crew names, S/L. G. R. Winch and S/L. C. W. Tiller, picked up within 15 minutes.
Again thanks both, Alex |

Presumably the Avenger was only operating with a crew of two on this occasion, or only the officers were named?
