SAAF Spitfire
On the 6.6.44 Capt Dunkerley was flying a 40 Squadron South African Airforce Spitfire in Italy.
His sorties details are unknown but his aircraft crashed on the above date and he was badly injured, he subsequently died as a result on the 11.6.44 Via another forum it has been suggested the Spitfire might have been ER863 ot JF451 Capt Dunkerley is buried at the Beach Head Cemetery Anzio. Any assistance on his aircraft would be great, or indeed anyone with specific research knowledge on this conflict area, thanks. Colin. |

Re: SAAF Spitfire
JF451 seems unlikely as it was a Mk VIII. I don't think 40 Sqn had any Mk VIIIs.
My guess is that if this thread was under 'Allied Air Forces' rather than 'WW2 in General' it would yield more response. |

Re: SAAF Spitfire
Thanks for that, I did try and found out about the fate of Cpt Dunkerley. Still need to try and identify his Spitfire. Thanks again Colin

Re: SAAF Spitfire
Was he killed due to enemy action or in an accident?

Re: SAAF Spitfire
He was on an operational sortie and then diverted due to weather conditions, he landed his Spitfire but as he did so a Thunderbolt aircraft landed ontop of his aircraft.
It appears it is classed as killed on service, not KIA. Colin |
