Matti/Chris

Excuse my ignorance here, but what was a Bombenschütze? I realise he must have been some kind of gunner, but why the extra title?

Chris in his answer implies Glosser was the BO.
Was there some kind of double function perhaps?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Lt.Helmut Winkler and crew missing 29.9.42. 5/KG53.

I have no exact knowledge, but have always thought that Bombenschütze replaced Beobachter, but had less training. So not actually any gunner, but a guy who was doing some navigation activities and of course aiming and releasing the bombs.
Maybe Chris can give better explanation.

Post Re: Lt.Helmut Winkler and crew missing 29.9.42. 5/KG53.

i think:

"bombenschütze" = bombardier = shooter who triggers the bombs in the aircraft.
"bordschütze" = gunner = gunner firing from an aircraft with a machine gun or cannon.

edit:
matti is right, a bombardier has an observer training course ...

regards
