Re: Identify Wellington Bomber

Indeed. Superb book by the way! Thanks for mentioning. That's where I have most of the information from. I have also some local eyewitness stories. But no details of the Wellington's serial or crewmembers names. No mentioning in Bomber Command Losses neither.

Re: Identify Wellington Bomber

Hello,

This Wellington incident sounds very much like the following loss mentioned in 2TAF3/432

24 February 1945
No.69 Sqn.
Wellington XIII NC604
Op: Visual recce, read Wassenberg - Maasniel
T/o. 2115

Shot down (e.2210) by Af (?)*, north-east of Hasselt.

Sgt W. H. Marshall +
Sgt J . C. Monaghan +
Sgt W. E. Davies +
Sgt L. Larkin
Sgt W. E. Reading (ORB quotes surname as Readman)

* The authors quote this abbreviation as; Af = Airfield.

The timing, location and casualties seem to match the aforementioned incident. Date is a bit of a worry.

Any thoughts?

Col.

Re: Identify Wellington Bomber

Col, I think it is the same incident, I think the book has the wrong date. There is a write up here (in Dutch and French) about Friendly Fire incidents, see page 10 and following) on NC-604:

http://www.dakota15wing.be/Dakota%20...39%20Digit.pdf

(You can Copy/Paste the related paragraphs into Google Translate to get a reasonable English version.)

The last paragraph translates as:

"Sergeant Marshall was 24, Sergeant Monoghan 21
years. The age of Davies is unknown to us.
The Wellington NC-604 crashed near Waterschei not far
from Liège. The three crew members were also
buried in Evere just beside Flying Officer Tinker and
his crew as well as many others from 69 Squadron
and his "Service Echelon 6069" which gave their lives
during the period when the 69th operated in Melsbroek from
from September 44 shortly after the liberation of Belgium."
