What FG or FS was based on Ascension Island in 1943?
Hi all,
Have been trying to ascertain the identity of the unit which flew P-39s out of Wideawake Field on Ascension in 1943. Was an entire fighter group based there? A single squadron? Have seen a single shot of of P-39s lined up there, but unable to make out the symbol/emblem just beneath the cockpit. Doesn't appear to be any squadron group markings on the planes in the shot, just the serial and that hard to see emblem/logo beneath the cockpit. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you!

According Maurer Maurer's Combat Squadrons of the Air Force World War II the P-39s fell under 1st Composite Squadron. Stationed at Ascension 14 Aug 1942 - 21 Oct 1944.
Squadron also had B-25s. Regards, Leendert |

Revi16,
Thank you for your reply. That photo certainly gives a more clear shot of that squadron emblem. So you're aware, I did read that Mitchell article and it had no info on the specific air units based there, just the main Army units. Thanks again for responding!

Hi Leendert,
Thank you for our reply. Will see where that leads! You know I looked through the Maurer volumes for squadrons and Combat Units and couldn't find anything in either. I just went back to the Squadrons volume and sure enough, there it is. Now I learned the search function on my pdf copy I have of the squadron volume doesn't work! LOL! Thanks again for responding!

Quick follow up: Leendert, was able to locate an article on the various Composite Squadrons and brief write-up of what each did here: https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA425511.pdf
Thanks again!
