Zimmert, 2./ NAGr 13; any info?
Hi All,
The guy with family name Zimmert died at Sept. 12th 44. Seems to me he belonged to ground personal. I’m looking for the reason he was killed but also some more details about the man. Thanks a lot in advance Rolf |

Re: Zimmert, 2./ NAGr 13; any info?
Under “Day, time, place and type of death” it says “Penzing bei Landsberg/Lech, Bomb. Spl. Kopf u. Körper”. So he was killed by bomb splinters in the head and body. I’d guess it was an American raid but it doesn’t look as if the 8th Air Force was attacking Bavarian targets that day.
These cards usually seem to say if it was an accident (“Unfall”) which suggests that this was a case of enemy action. |

15th Air Force was active over Bavaria on 12 September 1944:
"STRATEGIC OPERATIONS (Fifteenth Air Force): In Germany, nearly 330 B-17s and B-24s supported by P-38s and P-51s bomb Lechfeld Airfield, Munich/Allach engine works, and Wasserburg jet aircraft factory." http://paul.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/wwii...ml/Sep.44.html |

Good account of the Lechfeld attack here on pages 233-34:
