9./KG4 28/29 July 1940

Hi guys

I note that two Ju88s of 9./KG4 were involved in operational accidents (?) on 28 or 29 July 1940: 5J+DR (Oblt Podbielski) and 5J+DT (Uffz Dormann)

Had these aircraft been combat damaged?

Also:

Ju88 of 5./LG1 was shot down over UK (Pfaff/Bucke/Niesche/Schnellhardt). One of the aforementioned survived, but who?

Cheers
Brian

Re: 9./KG4 28/29 July 1940

Thanks Matti

I assume the 'flak' damage was inflicted by British AA fire, so against which target was 9/KG4 operating on this date? And at what time?

Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian,

Sorry for late reply to the second part of your question, but just seen it!

5(K)/LG1.
Junkers Ju88A ( ). Sortie to Plymouth. Shot down by RAF Spitfires of 234 Squadron and crashed in the Channel 30 miles off Plymouth, Dorset, 5.25am. Uffz. Bernhard Bucke (B) killed (Buried at Orglandes, France). Lt. Karl Pfaff (FF), Uffz. Walter Niesche (Bf), Obgefr. Werner Schnellhardt (Bs) missing. Aircraft lost.

I can't find any record of one of the crew surviving.

Brian,

Regarding the 9/KG 54 aircraft damaged by flak - Mason in the venerable "Battle over Britain" indicates that this happened over the Thames Estuary.

Battle of Britian TaN (vIV) gives no such indication.

Hi,

9./KG4 was probably engaged in mine-laying of Plymouth (history of 7./KG4 mentions such operation on 28.7.40 and 29.7.40).

Robert
