Fw 190 D wooden flaps

Hi Pilot

According to Jerry Crandall, there are at least two known Doras that were fitted with the wooden landing flaps, these being Fw 190 D-9 "Red 13" (W.Nr. 213 240) and Fw 190 D-13 "Yellow 10" (W.Nr. 830 017). There are a number of quite nice photographs of the landing flaps of the latter aircraft at the links below.

I have read that a number of Doras of JG 6 were also fitted with the wooden flaps so if you can come across any photographs of these aircraft there is a good possibility they had them as well. For what I have read they were quite unpopular as they quickly deteriorated in the winter weather. I hope this helps.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Fw190D wooden flaps

Thank you Leo for your kind attention. Second link is interesting, I did not know for this before. Well, if there is proof for the W.Nr. mentioned in your post, this could indicate that machines from this production block have wooden flaps. Good point on JG 6, I will have a look on the images from this unit and at least this give me good base for model build.

Cheers

Fw 190 D wooden flaps

Hi Pilot

In the Stipdonk/Mayer JG 51 photo-history there is a quite nice photograph of Fw 190 D-9 "White 11" (W.Nr. 213 007) which unlike the JV 44 machine of the same werknummer block, which apparently were sourced from recycled Fw 190 A-8 airframes, clearly shows that this fighter did not have the wooden flaps. So it would seem as if the werknummer block is not necessarily an indicator of the wooden flaps.

Horrido!

Leo
