B-17E "Sea Breeze" - N. Africa 1942- what serial?

Saw a picture of a B-17E named "Sea Breeze" and undergoing maintenance at Gura Air Depot, Eritrea, 1942.

Who has the serial for "Sea Breeze"?. A quick scan of Osbourne's B-17 Fortress Master Log gave no results...

A/c was one of the around 10 B-17s that saw a short career (July-Dec 42) with 1st Provisional Bombardment Group (became 376th BG) in Egypt.

Thanks for info.

Regards,

Leendert

Hello Leendert,
If I recall directly these few B17's came to the North African area from India.
Bereton Mission.

Looks like there were 16 a/c ?
Looking through the early B17's of the 7th Bomb Group may help ?

Re: B-17E "Sea Breeze" - N. Africa 1942- what serial?

Alex,

Some serials are mentioned (41-2475, 41-2602, 41-9027...) but alas no reference at all which one was "Sea Breeze".

Another one was "Fennell vs. Rommel" (41-9029).

Sixteen 7th BG crews from India to ME in 11 x B-17, 4 x B-24 and 1 x LB-30 (with pilot Wade?).

Regards,

Leendert

Re: B-17E "Sea Breeze" - N. Africa 1942- what serial?

No serial (yet), but additional info received on "Sea Breeze". This B-17E with pilot Capt. Earle A. Goodrich made a belly landing at an undisclosed N. African desert place (but in Allied territory) when a/c transferred to its new base at Biskra, Algeria to join 301st BG.

B-17 on ground was observed as ‘smashed up’ by another ex-376th BG B-17E (“Judge’s Jury” with Capt. Rowan T. Thomas), also on its way to Biskra. Period around 11-13 January 1943.

All Sea Breeze crew safe, picked up by a camel caravan. They reportedly had a general and colonel as passengers.

Route of above B-17s most likely direct from Gura Air Depot, Eritrea to Biskra, Algeria.

No immediate match in Joe Baugher's lists (B-17E serials 41-2393/2669 and 41-9011/9245).

Regards,

Leendert

Alex,

Most names of Goodrich crew also on 301st BG website after their transfer from 376th BG, but no further info found.

Have sent an email to 301st BG contact address

Sea Breeze definitively a B-17E.
