RAF Pilot shot as German Spy May 23,1940
I was just reading a book Dunkirk by Joshua Levine, which is a well written account of Dunkirk. I have at least three other books on Dunkirk so I think I can make a fair comparison.
On page 119 it has the following segment:"[O]n 23 May, a RAF pilot who had baled out of his aircraft was captured and shot by French soldiers as a spy." I looked through "Battle of France-Then and Now" by Cornwell but did not find anything. |

Learmond - Spitfire. - P9370. s/d over Dunkirk. 92 Sqn - Sgt(pilot) P.H. Klipsch - Spitfire -. P9373. s/d near Wierre-Effroy, France. 242 Sqn - P/O. G. A. Madore ( also noted as Malone) - Hurricane. - P2703. 242 Sqn - F/O. J. W. Graafstra - Hurricane. - P2809. 271 Sqn - P/O. J. R. McLaren - SM.73P. Then there was - 242 Sqn - P/O. J. Benzie, Hurricane P2550 s/d, bailed over Belgium near Ypres and eventually evacuated wounded via Dunkirk, I have not included the Blenheims or the SM73P other crew members. Additional Norman Franks "Air Battle Dunkirk" Page26 Tony Mould, following an engagement with a Heinkel, was hit by return fire. His chute opened and he landed in a field of young wheat. Some French Infantry in the locality fired several shots at him despite him standing up with hands in the air. Then some British soldiers arrived and took him with them to their HQ they were Grenadier Guards. This would seem to be the event you mentioned. Except FCL gives details for the 24th - 74 Sqn - Sgt E. A. Mould Spitfire I - K9952 All the best Alex Last edited by Alex Smart; 15th September 2019 at 13:31. |
