Colonel Robert Hall

Hi All

SDASM has recently published some photos from Col Robert Hall's collection.
They are all sub-tagged
Colonel Robert Hall was assigned to the 62 Squadron of the famous 56 FG at Boxted Air Base in England during WWII and was credited with the destruction of two enemy aircraft (Junkers Ju- 188 bombers). He flew 55 combat missions with a total of 310 combat hours in WWII and the Korean War.
I am unable to find this man in Frank Olynyk's USAAF credits for the destruction of enemy aircraft, victory list no.5

I have come across two Robert Hall in the Schiffer book 'Beware the Thunderbolt!' by David McLaren. Both these Halls are credited with one damaged each (none of these claims are listed by Frank Olynyk). Presumably it is the individual listed as Major Robert W. Hall and not the 2nd Lt Robert S Hall I am after. However we are still far short of the two claimed Ju 188.

I then have to assume the above claims refer to air-to-ground kills and not air-air. Could anyone confirm or correct my assumptions?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Colonel Robert Hall

Lt. Robert W. Hall was assigned to the 62nd Squadron, Lt. Robert S. Hall was assigned to the 63rd Squadron. Neither of these pilots were awarded confirmed claims (destroyed, probable or damaged, either in the air or on the ground) by the Victory Credit Board. The Maj. R.W. Hall mentioned in McLaren's book is perhaps an error; Robert W. Hall was probably not a Major on December 2, 1944 since he was a Lt. when he joined in October of 1944. The only 62nd Squadron pilot claiming on December 2 was Capt. R.W. Davis with two Me 109's claimed destroyed. Where McLaren found Hall claiming a damaged on December 2 is a mystery. Also, R.W. Hall made no ground claims; I have the Victory Credit Board reports on microfilm (from Frank Olynyk). Neither of the Hall's are mentioned anywhere for ground claims. But, perhaps I've missed something when going through the reports. Hopefully someone else can clear things up with 100% accuracy.

Re: Colonel Robert Hall

Thanks for checking your files Kent

The SDASM sub-tag is then more interesting than I initially thought.
The photos presented here and forward, are quite indifferent (to me at least) and all are all post WW 2.

None show anything from a supposed WW 2 or Korean service.

His rank of Colonel must be his final one, and I agree with you that being a Ltn in October 1944 and Major in November sounds like a too fast climb of ranks, even for wartime.

Cheers
