Question on location of base for I./ZG2 on 26.5.40, Neufchâteau airfield.
Hello,
On 26.5.40 the I./ZG2 Gr.Kdr., Hptm. Gentzen, was killed in a crash at Neufchâteau airfield, which I presume was the temporary unit base at the time. In looking this up, I find that there are one town by this name in France, and two in Belgium. Which one was the I./ZG2 base at the time? Regards, |

Hi Larry,
according to F.Roger book "Combats oublies du ciel des Ardennes ..." they were on St.Hubert airfield but there are few villages St.Hubert in France and I don`t if this was 55660 or 55700? Regards Robert |

Hi ,
St-Hubert is just 15 miles north of Neufchateau in Belgium. Greetings |

Re: Question on location of base for I./ZG2 on 26.5.40, Neufchâteau airfield.
Hi: RAF battles from 103,142 and 150Sqn were active in the Recogne, Ochampes, St. Hubert area around 11:15 (German time) and reported engaging bf110's. All of these are slightly N, N-W of Neaufchateau in Belgium. I/ZG2 suffered other losses this day, besides Gentzen, so perhaps this is the action that provoked his ultimately fatal scramble. Regards Dean.

Re: Question on location of base for I./ZG2 on 26.5.40, Neufchâteau airfield.
Gentlemen,
It appears that the Neufchâteau relating to I./ZG2 on May 26th was in Belgium, not France, but my "mapquest" search request turns up two different places with that name, both in the Wallonie part of Belgium. One is 5-6 miles east-northeast of Liége and the other is in Luxembourg Province in the extreme southeastern part of the country. I suspect that the reference I'm looking for is to the latter, but I'm not certain. Who can confirm this for me? Regards |
