Re: 4.(S)/LG2 Insignia: background color, origins & relation to personal insignia of Adolf Galland

Gentlemen,
according to original documents Oblt. Galland was Staka of the 4.Staffel. He came to the II.(Sch)/LG 2 on 1.7.1939 and left this unit going directly to II./JG 52 at Böblingen.

Re: 4.(S)/LG2 Insignia: background color, origins & relation to personal insignia of Adolf Galland

Many/Marius,

It is my belief that the information on Galland as the StaKap of 5.(S)/LG2 when he first joined the unit on 1.7.39 is not correct, but I guess that it's possible that he was on the Gruppenstab immediately after he joined II.(S)/LG2. What was the date that Hptm. Weiss moved up from 4 StaKap to command the Gruppe? Does anyone have that info handy? When he vacated that position must be the key of when Galland replaced him.

Regards,

Many,

Where was Otto Weiss before 1.12.39? Galland was flying L2+AM on 9.8.39 and subsequently almost every day, so he had to be the StaKap at least by that date. I thought that Weiss was StaKap of 4 Staffel before Galland. There's an unexplained gap here.

Hello Larry.

At the beginning of his career Otto Weiss was Technical Officer, in a recce gruppe, after he was in the stab of JG 134, He spent a little time in another unit, I don't remember which one, and begun his career in II (s) LG 2 with the creation of the unit in October 1938, in the stab of the unit.

I really don't know if he was one time the staka of 4.(S)/LG2

Hello Larry.

I am curious. And I looked for in the vol 1 of the frantastic books of Mr Prien and Friends, and Page 222, I read

that Oblt Adolf galland was staka of 1./JG 52 from 01.11.38 to 31.07.39 to became at this date Staka of 5.(S)/LG2.

very interesting.

Many,

Thank's for noticing that. Now I'll have to check that out. I consider Prien's volumes very authoritative, but not without mistakes. Will ask him about that directly.

Weiss was Staka of the 5.Staffel and he took the command over the II.Gruppe on 9.9.1939 after Maj.Spielvogel was shot down over Warsaw.
