Junkers Ju 87 of Schlachtgeschwader 2 "Immelmann"

Hi folks!
We have updated our www.rlm.at website with new colour profiles. This time three Ju 87 flown by SG2! First one shows the Ju 87 G-2 flown by Hans Ulrich Rudel.

For more infos about these planes please go here: http://www.rlm.at/cont/profil18_e.htm
Comments and criticism are welcome!
Cheers, Simon

Simon,

You've fallen into a trap by placing what some authors purport to be the insignia of StG2 at the top of your artwork. That is a long-standing error started by Karl Ries, which has been carried forward ever since. That is, in fact, the insignia of 7./StG2, not the Geschwader.

Regards,

Interesting, I have thought, it is insignia for whole III./StG (SG) 2 ...

Wonderful profile Simon, thank you for sharing it with us!

Larry

Could you show us what the emblem Geschwader emblem looks like? I think all the books I know of reference this as StG 2s insignia, it would seem they have copied Karl Ries' error.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi Larry! Interesting! My source was Barry Ketley and Mark Rolfes Luftwaffe Embleme Book! The great Stukageschwader Immelmann book by Holger Nauroth also shows this emblem!

Can you show me a pic of the SG 2 emblem if this one is incorrect?

Cheers, Simon

Hi,

Larry I think the 7./StG2 (used in Poland, France) emblem consisted from white cross on perhaps red shield. The stab/StG2 used firstly the emblem no.484 from Ketley&Rolfe book and then also - first photos appeared during the Balkan Campaign - this black cross on white shield.

Regards

Robert

Re: Junkers Ju 87 of Schlachtgeschwader 2 "Immelmann"

Hello,

Robert is right, the red (?) shield with white cross observed in ECPA photos in Poland was 7./StG2. I have or know of nearly a dozen other photos during the PC and FC showing this version of the emblem on Ju87Bs, and all of them are on a/c of 7 Staffel. The aircraft code, T6+_R, is visible on a number of them, and 7 Staffel is the only staffel in III./StG2 that has not previously had the staffel emblem published. The white shield/black cross is apparently the Geschwader emblem. I had the colors of the cross/shield confused in my mind. Sorry for the comment on the artwork without doing my research properly.

Anyway, what everyone learned from this is the so far "missing" and unpublished (correctly) Staffel insignia for 7./StG2.

Regards,
