Name of town in the Ukraine

Hi all,

Attached is a scan of the back of a photo with the caption:
"Deutsches Notgelandetes Flugzeug in der Nähe....????"

Translation: German forced landed aircraft in the area of...???

Does anyone know what village/city is written here? It looks like it's something like Steoira. It should be in the Novograd/Shitomir area.

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

Hello Rudi,

I cannot make out much in that handwriting, but it reads more like "Snoinuv" to me. Both "Steoira" and "Snoinuv" cannot be recognised as names of any place in Ukraine, even allowing for German corruption of Slavic place names.

The big towns that you are referred to are Novohrad-Volyns'kyi (Ukrainian: Новогра́д-Воли́нський, Russian: Новогра́д-Волы́нский) and Zhytomyr (Жито́мир – same in Russian and Ukrainian).
There is a small vilage called Stoyaniv (Ukrainian: Стоя́нів, Russian: Стоя́нов), but it is far to the west of Novohrad and Zhytomyr.

I think we need a more accurate reading of the German handwriting. Do you want to have a second look?

Warm regards,

Paul

Hello Roland,

Now, that could be it! I have to say I have no idea how you read Skwira from the handwriting, but it is a place in Ukraine Skvyra (Скви́ра, same in Ukrainian and Russian) is a small town in Kiev Oblast, coordinates 49°44'N 29°40'E. It is some 95 kilometres from Zhytomyr, so not particularly close, but it is the right sounding name, at least.

Warm regards,

Paul

Deutsche Kurrentschrift, coll "Sütterlin".
I still learned it at school beside the modern Normschrift.
Just to be able to read our grandparents' handwriting.
