Fw 58 of Luftflottennachrichtenschule 4, 30 March 1941

Hello,

On 30 March 1941 a Fw 58 of Luftflottennachrichtenschule 4 was destroyed in a crash near Sonneberg.

I am missing the WNr and the crew fate (even if I suspect that in this case there was no casualty).

I will also appreciate if someone can give more details about the crash location: there are 4 Sonneberg in Germany, but as the unit was based in Budweis, now Ceske Budejovice in Czech Republic, it is also possible that the crash place is now in Czech territory and bears an other name. All four Sonneberg in Germany are also close enough from the Czech border to be candidates for this crash.

Thanks in advance

Laurent

Thanks Eric,

A surprise for me that these four killed aircrew. None of them are on the Volksbund database, as they probably were buried in family graves.

The same unit lost , according to the same source, another Fw 58 near Chambery, France, on 30 March 1943.

I found no trace of it, but there is a Fw 58 wreck in the Lac du Bourget in this area, that several websites said crashed in 1944. One gives the date of 30 March 1944, identifies it as the Fw 58 WNr 3652 (2 crew killed, 2 saved) from Lyon-Bron (the base of Luftflottennachrichtenschule 4 at this time).

Edited: here is the link: http://www.cpalb.fr/avion.php

Can someone confirm this second loss as well ? Seems my original source is rather unreliable...

Thanks in advance

Laurent

Hello Laurent,

From RL2 III 775, the Fw 58 lost on 30/03 was a C-2 Wnr 3652 coded TD+QE from LNS 4. Fw Ernst CHRONZ and Gfr Kurt BECKER killed / Gfr Otto STEINBACH and Gfr Rudolf SCHIEWE wounded.

The file RL2 III 775 covering the losses reported between 15 March 1943 and 30 June 1943, seems that the loss occured finally in 1943 as said by my original source and not in 1944 as shown in many webpages...

Thanks

The loss is also reported in BA-MA Signatur RL 2 III/783, Flzg.Unfälle bei Schulen und usw., p.308, an almost duplicate fiche set for the same time period - there minor differences between the sets, mostly with the handwritten notations.
