16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
Hi all,
I hope that somebody out there can help me with a query. I am trying to work out where I can locate a list of claims made by the Luftwaffe on October 16th 1940. Sgt Chalupa of 310 Squadron died on this date and it has been supected that he was overcome by fumes in his hurricane cockpit. I just wanted to see if the Luftwaffe made any claims of a combat victory that had previously not been allocated to a victim. There are two reasons for this:- 1. Joseph Hybler who flew with Chalupa on this date described seeing the hurricane going down trailing white smoke. No mention of a radio message from Chalupa complaining of a fault. 2. Chalupa's death certificate shows that he died of multiple injuries after baling out of his hurricane, his parachute having failed to open properly. I hope that someone can perhaps shed a little light on this. Gerry |

Re: 16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
Hi Gerry & all,
Official version is the one about engine / smoke problem but possibility that some German fighter set a few of round into Sgt Chalupa´s a/c is in the air. Sgt Chalupa t/o from Duxford at 2.30pm and b/o at about 3pm near by Ely. He was youngest pilot of the 310 Sqn at that time. His Hurricane P3143, NN-D was most successful machine of the squadron with six confirmed enemy a/c. Regards, Michal |

Re: 16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
Hi Michal,
Many thanks for your reply. I agree that it is possible that he was shot down, if he had been overcome by fumes how would he have baled out? I suspect that the answer will never be found. Best wishes Gerry |

Re: 16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
Gerry,
I repeat what Chris Goss has already stated in your other thread, there are no corresponding Luftwaffe fighter claims on that date. None whatsoever. |

Re: 16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
Hi Peter,
Thanks again for that information on the Luftwaffe claims. It seems then, he was starting to be overcome by fumes and decided to bale out. What a tragedy that his parachute failed to open. Gerry |

Re: 16th October 1940 Luftwaffe claims
If he was on Oxygen at the time it makes it unlikley that he would be overcome by fumes?
Also any chance he was shot down by a fellow RAF pilot, do any RAF claims have definate Luftwaffe victim? |

Nothing at all. It was an accident.
