I believe Bordmechaniker Fw Karl GIESEN was also aboard the aircraft.

Thanks Peter, that was an unexpected surprise. I had this down as a 4 man crew! Another name to add to my ever increasing casualty list.

To Peter Cornwell, can I ask for your expert advice? The Heinkel He111 was designed to operate with a 5 man crew. So would they always operate during 1940/41 with 5 men? I'm starting to wonder how many other He111's I have on my records with only 4 men

The He111 didn't always operate with five crewmen aboard. Like most things in wartime it would be subject to the nature of the sortie and availability of crews etc. In short, it varied. Four or five but in my experience generally five crewmen were carried.
