Luftwaffe vs. Operation Outward - any encounter?
From March 1942 to September 1944 the British sent up almost 100.000 (or 100,000 if you like) balloons towards hopefully Germany to disrupt power lines and/or start fires, depending on the type of balloon. Code name was Operation Outward, of which more info on the web.
Notwithstanding the relative small size of the balloons used, did a Luftwaffe fighter ever shoot down such a balloon? Engagements by fighters known? Any leads welcome. Regards, Leendert |

Re: Luftwaffe vs. Operation Outward - any encounter?
Hi,
I have a Flugbuch to Ofw Walter Neuhaus of 7./NG3 who crashed his BF110 trying to shoot down one of those balloons on his first Feindflug. I’ll see if I can put the scan of his death card in - sadly his Flugbuch stopped a month before his death in 1942. |

Thanks for pointing me to this example. In a far corner of my memory is a report of a shooting down over Norway as well, but lost trace of a reference.
