Re: US fighters with No. 100 Group RAF

AIR 25/777 for April: "U.S.A.A.F. Detachment, Little Snoring. This detachment working in conjunction with No. 515 Squadron were detailed for 21 sorties, of these 10 were completed. This unit was equipped with P.51's and P.38's and therefor had none of the navigation guides of normal intruder aircraft. It was due to this factor that a number of sorties were cancelled, due to the fact that they were unable to pin-point themselves before crossing the enemy coast. Lt. Garlock however did succeed in attacking three barges. This unit has now ceased to be attached to this Group but it is hoped that Major Gates will be operating shortly in a Mosquito in order to complete his trials for the 8th Air Force".

Major Gates can be identified as (later) Col. Thomas Lee Addison Gates from Louisiana (1908-1992).
