Me 110s at Operation Donnerkeil

Thanks Marcel for this information.

JG 1 took indirectly part too: they were sent to NW. Germany near Wilhelmshaven to protect the ships upon their arrival and thereafter. Source: the book "Adolf Galland - The Authorized Biography", by David Baker, published by Windrow & Greene, 1996. A good book. Extract from page 182, end of 5th paragraph:

"With the 60 Bf 109s from JG 1 he would have a maximum of 252 aircraft plus a further 30 Bf 110s for dawn and dusk patrols."

All the best,

Thank you, Marcel.

Would you have any information about the crew that flew the shark-mouthed Bf 110 G9+JM used in the Operation Donnerkeil?

Operation Donnerkeil in "The JG 26 War Diary"

Hello Ferreira.

I had a look at Don Caldwell's relevant book on JG 26. Op. Donnerkeil on pages 203-211. He mentions the airfields at Audembert, Coquelles (several times) and more. At 8.14 hrs on February 12, four Bf 110s take off from Abbeville (first protection of the ships by fighters).

9.20 hrs: 15 Bf 110s take off from Abbeville
9.21 hrs: 11 Bf 109s from Jagdfliegerschule 5 based at Villacoublay (this is very close to Paris, fairly deep inside French territory and far from the coast) take off (…) "probably from Octeville".

The most frequently mentioned airfields are Coquelles and Abbeville.

Calais-Marck, Arques and others are mentioned.

There are quite a few instances of unknown or unspecified airfields during the whole operation.

It seems there was no normal order of battle for Luftwaffe fighters for they used all possible airfields, sometimes haphazardly or performing some emergency landings, depending on fuel reserves or starvation, combat, position of the ships etc. The locations of airfields they used naturally moved toward North-East at the same time as the ships did in the sea. Caen-Carpiquet is not mentioned. Of course the fighters were stationed and waited for orders to take off, somewhere before the operation began - possibly around Le Havre, Audembert and other places including Abbeville.
