Who bombed Insterburg on 27 July 1944 ?

Several websites claimed that Insterbug, in East Prussia, was heavily bombed by the RAF on 27 July 1944.

It was not the case, no RAF aircraft flew to this area on either night (26-27 or 27-28). By the way I has not found yet on which night Insterburg was bombed.

Nachjad claim lists show many claims by NJG 100 and 102 on both nights... against Soviet bombers. They scored respectively 9 and 3 claims (but maybe not all over East Prussia).

At this stage of the war, the Soviet air force was able to mount heavy air attacks on German towns, but I think even in East Prussia, any night attack was supposed to be from the RAF.

Can anyone give me details from the Soviet point of view on this raid ? Thanks in advance

Re: Who bombed Insterburg on 27 July 1944 ?

Fun fact: I have found a dozen Russian webpages all saying Insterburg was bombed by British aircraft that night.

From searches of death cards on fold3, it seems that the bombing was during the night of 27-28 July 1944. I found eight men of 2./Marsch Batl z.b.V. 424 who died on 28 July 1944, cause "Bo. Spl" (which I translate as "Bomben Splitter", bomb schrapnel). Five other German soldiers died in Insterburg that day, but with no reason given. No German soldiers died in Insterburg on 26 or 27 July.

The RAF BC Königsberg raids were 26th August and 29th August 44

Insterburg was another 50 miles east of that.

Definitely think any other bombing would be Russian in origin

Martin
