Help: Request for aerial photos of Foggia airfield (USAAF)

I'm currently researching airfileds occupied by the 325th FG (an many others) while in Italy.

Thus far I have photos of Lesina but I'm missing photographs of Foggia its revetments, taxiways and runway(s).

I do however have the coordinates on Google Earth showing the remnants of Foggia Airfield. If you have Google Earth here are the coordinates: 41°30'30.70"N, 15°32'43.28"E

Any help in getting Aerial photos of Foggia would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Help: Request for aerial photos of Foggia airfield (USAAF)

Dear Rafael,

there were at least eleven satellite airfields around Foggia since 1943, and used by the Luftwaffe before being taken over and operated by the USAAF units. It is known about Foggia #1, #3, #4, #5, #7, #9, #11, as reported by the Air Intelligence reports.

Unfortunately, there are no data to determine which was what and it seems that there are so few images of them that none has surfaced so far.

Re: Help: Request for aerial photos of Foggia airfield (USAAF)

Hi
See if you can get a look at "RAF Squadrons" by C G Jefford. There is a section in the book devoted to Airfields and on p234 there is a map of S Italy which shows the position of Foggia Airfield and also 12 Subsidiary Airfields/LG's surrounding the town of Foggia.. The map has a simple Lat and Long Grid and the co-ordinates should be simple to work out for each Airfield. Unfortunately there are no photos!!
Hope this might help.
Regards
Dick

Monguse

Don't give up - I think that there is a good chance that there will be reconnaissace imagery of most if not all of the Foggia sites preserved in the US National Archives. The search procedure is by degree square on a 1:250 000 scale AMS map background. Check the lat/longs of the airfields using Jefford and that will aid your search.

best

Chris

Re: Help: Request for aerial photos of Foggia airfield (USAAF)

No photos, but this may be of help.

The following are some of the Foggia airfields I have found mentioned over the years. Sal Sola and Sans Sola may be the same airfield.

Foggia #1 Celon 4113n01530e
Foggia # 3 Sal Sola
Foggia-Amendola A/F
Foggia Main A/F
Foggia-Morin A/f
Foggia-Sans Sola L/G
Hope this is of use. If anyone has a complete list .....

Walt

The file on the Dornier 217 in the National Archives AIR40/ series does have some photos of Do 217 wrecks taken at Foggia. From memory, these mainly show details such as the "Giesskanne" tail guns, there isn't a good view of the airfield (or not more than a few square metres of it, anyway).
