Aussie Observer 853 Sqn

Hope someone can help! There was a RAN (probably more correctly RANVR) Observer serving in Avengers with 853 NAS in 1944. I seem to remember discovering him in an article or book by Dennis Newton years ago. He's recorded somewhere in my notes, but just where is anyone's guess.

What was his name? Pretty sure he was with 853 when embarked on HMS Tracker undertaking Arctic convoy escort.

Re: Aussie Observer 853 Sqn

Hi Bruce,

I have a book written by an 853 Sqn pilot. It's in the loft somewhere so I will try and find it later today. It's quite a good account of anti-shipping strikes off Norway 1944-45.

regards

Keith

Re: Aussie Observer 853 Sqn

Sorry mate, I found the book (Ordinary Naval Airman by HJC Spencer) in my loft (eventually - in a box with Napoleonic stuff!) but although he does mention a few Kiwis he doesn't highlight an observer from your neck of the woods. I will look again and hopefully it's there somewhere.

cheer-oh

Keith

Thanks Keith. I'll be in touch.

For those interested, there are a couple of pics of 853 NAS Avengers here:

Re: Aussie Observer 853 Sqn

Sub-Lt Reginald James Torrington (S/4337) RANVR; Observer 853 NAS 1944/45 (Swordfish and Avenger).

The book was actually by Ross A. Pearson (who was himself a WOp/AG 102 Sqn RAF) and published in 1995: 'Australians at War in the Air 1939-1945 Vol 2'.
