6./JG 2 21 July 1942

I know that this has come up before but was Uffz Johann Rosner of 6./JG 2 involved in the combat with 2 Mustangs of 239 Sqn? One Mustang came down at Norville as did Rosner's Fw 190. Some records say LK, others say technical problems

Re: 6./JG 2 21 July 1942

Hello Chris,

the Gen.Qu. loss return from 23 July 1942 item 112 and JFV Vol. 7 say technische Mängel / technical problems. In the BA Freiburg version of the Gen.Qu. loss return is the handwritten amendment Verlustursache 20/loss category 20 = Totalverlust ohne Feindeinwirkung mit Feindauftrag/destroyed without enemy action on operational flight.

Regards
Leo

Interesting on both counts. Rowland Veal remained in the RAF after the war but retired in 1970 due to health and then doesn't figure on the 2004 RAF List. Look forward to further information

Re: 6./JG 2 21 July 1942

Document found , but no ref. alas . I think I got it thanks to either Colin Ford or Steve ? :
'' 21/7/1942 : 239 , F/L Veal , Fw190 destroyed , Claim based on interpretation of extract from pilot's personal letter (P/W) " .
Interesting sentence at the bottom of the same page :
" P.S : if F/Lt Veal's claim is allowed it is , I believe , the first Fw190 to be shot down from the air and might be worth a story by P.R.O " .
This document is dated 20 Sept. 1942 and signed by W/Cdr Ops ?

If Veal's claim is confirmed this is the very first RAF Mustang victory . In the other side the Fw190 might have crashed after a loss of control at low altitude during the fight , but not a technical problem .
