1Lt Jay Karpin, 493rd BG, 8th AF

Another wonderful soul has left our world for the next.
Jay Karpin served as a bombardier on B-24s and B-17s in Europe during the Second World War, flying more than 35 combat missions.
For his service, Lieutenant Karpin was awarded the Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, the Presidential Unit Citation, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 battle stars, a personal citation from General Jimmy Doolittle, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the French Legion of Honor.
After the war he worked with the United States Air Force to develop air-to-air refueling technology for the F-84 and the F-105.
I was honored to meet him back in 2019 at an event honoring veterans, and thoroughly enjoyed his wit, humor, and indefatigable good cheer.
People like Jay Karpin are the foundation upon which our modern military has been built, and his life of service is a credit to humanity.
As George Patton once said, we should thank God that such men lived.
Mr. Karpin passed away on September 12th, 2022, at the age of 98.
