FW 190 w/n 173056

Hi,
I'm looking for some information on Focke-Wulf 190-A8 w/n 173056.

Several publications list the aircraft as being manufactured in Cottbus in July 1944 however the original data tag is stamped with NAT which indicates Marienberg.

There is some suggestion that this aircraft served as "White 14" of I/JG11.

This blog (http://falkeeins.blogspot.com.au/201...gust-1944.html) suggests that 173053 was flown by Gefr. Paul Dorlöchter of 3./JG 11, downed by US anti-aircraft fire in the vicinity of Mantes, 24 August 1944 so I assume that 173056 was a part of the same gruppe.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

The only tidbit I have for FW 190A-8 WNr.173056: It was found abandoned and stripped in late-fall 1944 in the Rheims RR yard; AI2(G) serial 260

All the Fw 190A-8 with WNr. 17xxxx were manufactured at Cottbus, the WNr. 173056 left the assemly line in July 1944.

"nat" was the manufacturer code for Fw Marienburg (not Marienberg), this plant was 100% destroyed in an air raid on 9.04.44 while producing Fw 190G-8 long range fighter bombers.

May be that some undamaged subassemblies from Marienburg were shipped afterwrds to Cottbus - but I do not have information about.

Stephen F. Polyak previously posted two typenschilden (plural?) that pertain to this conversation.

One is similar to WNr. 173056 discussed above:

The second supports Merlin’s statement regarding Fw190G-8s being produced at Fw-Marienburg:

Fw190G-8 (190051) R5, Fw-Marienburg (nat)

I would have posted images of the two plates mentioned, but sadly, my computer is smarter than I am.

Do we know with any certainty if this particular aircraft - or indeed this block of aircraft - was delivered to gruppe I or gruppe II of JG11?

It appears that gruppe II did not have any FW190's however the following link indicates that gruppe I did. http://www.cieldegloire.com/jg_011.php

We don't yet know whether this aircraft served with any part of JG 11. Close Werk Nummern are not an infallible guide to the unit(s) aircraft were allocated to.

It was found in a railway yard at Reims and that city was liberated on 30 August 1944, so the aircraft was ferried to France between its manufacture in July and the end of August. It could have been damaged without ever leaving a depot or it could have seen active service. Jean-Bernard Frappé's book on the Luftwaffe in Normandy lists all the wrecks found including this one; some are cross-referenced to a unit which recorded their loss but this one is not. That suggests that there he knew of no record of this machine being lost or damaged in action when he wrote the book.

It may yet turn up in (for example) a photo, a pilot's log book, an ULTRA decrypt or the lists of aircraft passing through the repair facility at Cravant but nothing in this thread so far makes me certain that it was a JG 11 machine.

Dear Stephan,

Thank you for posting images of the two tags to which I referred.
I think I speak for many others when I say that I am thrilled each time you post a new typenschild from your collection.

I particularly enjoy entering any new data into my database files, especially when it fills in some blank, or better yet, flies in that face of accepted dogma.
