Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

Hi Guys.
Can anybody clarify this code for me.
I am looking for clarity if there was a coded Stuka unit with codes 6M (Kustenstaffel Krim) or 6N (KG 100 or KG 54) that operated in the Western Desert.
I am sure about the 6 but it may be M or N.. 4th code letter is X (19 Staffel)
3rd code not visible.
looks like R version.
Tan with green blotches.
On looking up these unit histories they did not get mentioned anywhere in the desert.
Thx
Stefaan

Re: Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

That letter X that apparently used to denote the 19 Staffel sounds somewhat strange - perhaps a school unit?

That's the Ju 87R-4 WNr. 6280 GN+WX used for DFS 230 glider towing by VK(S) 2 and blown up by own troops on 11.11.42 at Tobruk.

Re: Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

Hi
Thx a million. That's why I could not find it on any of the usual Luftwaffe unit list of codes.
Much appreciated.

Gerhard

Out of interest what did VK(S) stand for? Verband Kommando (Schlepp) 2?
I notice that Shores et al (and Barry Rosch) calls the unit Verb St (S) 2.

Which is correct? Perhaps both?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

VK (S) 2 is standing for: Verbindungskommando (Schlepp) for Luftflotte 2.

Re: Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

Hi.
I see that the VKS units had a number of a/c, including the JU 87's, and that there was re-organisation in the 1943's. Some were called (GO)VK(S) units, and also 1./LLG 2.
Was this W.Nr noted in a specific VKS unit or could it also have been in a GO unit? I see they had more of the towing a/c than gliders.
Thx

Re: Ju 87 unit code 6M/N

Do 17, Ju 87 or Hs 126 were used to tow DFS 230 gliders in the (DFS)/VK(S) units and He 111 were used to tow Go 242 gliders in the (Go)/VK(S) units. The same towing aircraft were used after October 1943 by the Schleppgruppen 1 to 3.

The above units were pure supply units whereas LLG 1 and 2 were intended for airborne operations. For short periods - like the Stalingrad airlift - the LLGs performed also supply missions.
