20 May 1940 French sub bombed.
Hi guys
A French submarine (identity unknown but possibly Rubis) was bombed and damaged off Dundee on 20 May 1940. Her attacker may have been RAF or FAA. Any ideas? Cheers Brian Last edited by Brian; 17th September 2009 at 15:16. |

20 May 1940 French sub bombed.
The sub was the "Achille". It was badly hit and came back to Brest. The sub was destroyed by the french in this port before the arrival of germans troops (the 18th june). Source ="Les sous-marins français. 1918/1945" written by claude HUAN, Marines éditions

Re: 20 May 1940 French sub bombed.
Hi,
Not one I knew about before but I found this: http://books.google.com/books?id=uj3...dundee&f=false I'm not a fan of google books but in this case it proves useful. A Hudson dropped three 250lb anti submarine bombs which, for once, did their job. There are a couple of other "friendly fire" incidents against submarines that I'm aware of: An attack on HMS Snapper was made by the RAF on 3rd December 1939. Arriving back in port, the unhappy captain reported that not only had he been attacked by his own side but, despite a direct hit on his conning tower, the only damage was four broken light bulbs in the control room. On 5th September 1939 a Coastal Command Anson K8845 of 235 Squadron made four attack runs on HMS Seahorse, without result. The anti-submarine bomb was replaced by the far more effective aerial dropped depth charge. Allan |

Re: 20 May 1940 French sub bombed.
This sub arrived from France the 18th april1940 to Harwich than to Dundee ( a few french sub where send in England to help the british navy to survey the north sea).
The Achille left Dundee the 7 may for a patrol in the north sea. The 20 may the sub was coming back in surface near Dundee (going to Rosyth) when a british bomber droped 5 bombs (no mention of the type of plane). The crew did not have the time to send friendly flares before being hit. The sub came back to Brest the 29 Please forgive my very basic english... |
