Two probably unknown Ju88 losses (Lfl.1?) Aug.42

Hello gentlemen,

according to Kriegsmarine documents, 3.Aug. or 4.Aug.42 Ju88 made a crash landing "bei Wistina (südl.Glinki)" (somewhere on the south coast of Finnish Gulf). 1 crewman was badly wounded, 3 - slightly wounded.

21.Aug.42 Ju88 was damaged by AA fire over Lavansaari island (west of Leningrad) and after the fighter attacks had ditched in Kotka area. Crew was rescued, the plane had drowned.

1st loss was maybe less than 10% damage but 2nd was certainly 100%.
Can't find both cases in GQM returns.

Any ideas?

Best regards,
Andrey

Andrey

The second incident is mentioned by Hannu Valtonen in his book Luftwaffen pohjoinen sivusta, but no WNr or unit seems to be known.
He lists a time 21.35H but that is basically all I can add since I don't read Finnish (unfortunately)

Possibly Matti has located some further details after this book was published...

Cheers
Stig

Thank you, Stig!

Surprisingly I can't find the mentions about the incident 21.Aug42 from the Soviet side yet.
It is enigmatically.

Maybe Matti can help.

Cheers,
Andrey

I have no more info on that loss and I don't know where Hannu has got his info.

Very interesting news. When your book will be released? It will be a Lw losses reference book?

Best regards,
Andrey

Maybe some addition to your infos:

21.08.42; 7./KG.1; O; (F); Qu61634; flak fire, fighter attack, forced landing; Ju.88A-4; Wnr.3716; 100%; crew unharmed

Cover of the passage of ships:
On 21.08.1942 a flight of I-153s of 71 IAP (61 IABR, KBF) (Gruzdev, Tsapov and Kirinchuk) covered the passage of ships. At 20:00 at a height of 1700-2000 m off to the south of Lavansaari they met one Ju-88. The first attack of Tsapov and Gruzdev made from the top and head-on from a distance of 200-50 m with by machine-gun fire hit the right motor. The aircraft began to smoke and with a sharp decrease began to depart to the north. Then Gruzdev and Kirinchuk attacked with RSami from a distance of 600-700 m at a height of 400-100 m and from the top on the tail with machine-gun fire from a distance of 200 m. The "Junkers" for a while continued to go to the north, but then fell south of Sommeri Is..
Information sources:
1.*Tsapov I.I., Konev V.N., Myasnikov Yu.A. The winged guardsmen of the baltik. - M.: OOO "DELTA NB", 2006.

Cheers

According to Hannu Valtonen the exact location of the ditching was "Zwischen Lehmäsaari und Hietakari, 6 km südlich Kotka". It seems that the aircraft could limp from Someri almost to the Finnisch coast.

This episode is absent in operative report of VVS KBF. It seems the info about sorties of 71.IAP based on Lavansaari is incomplete in operative reports - maybe due to farness of the island.

Cheers,
Andrey

Re: Two probably unknown Ju88 losses (Lfl.1?) Aug.42

One more presumable participant of the raids against Leningrad's outpost - Lavansaari:

25.Jul.42 Ju88 4./KG1 Feindbeschuss bei Leningrad, FF Fw Rudolf Winnerl wounded.

Why 4./KG1 from Lw.Kdo Ost (central sector of East Front) made a sortie in Lfl.1 sector?
And maybe some details (operational task, more precise location, WNr etc) are known?

Best regards,
Andrey

1942-07-25, 4./KG 1, Ju 88 A-4, 0886787, V4+CM, Bei Leningrad
Flugzeugführer Fw Winnerl, Rudolf, verletzt
Flakbeschuß. Bruch ? %.
According to my info 4./KG 1 was from Lfl. 1.
