Bf 109 E-1 - Yellow 8 - II./JG 27
Dear All,
Reference is made to the recent eBay offer here http://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Jagd-Flu...IAAOSw14xWN26u If I remember correctly, in Prien, Stemmer and others JFV der Deutschen Luftwaffe, Part 3, it was stated that II./JG 27 did not have any emblem sported on its aircraft during the Westfeldzug, or the Battle of the Low Countries and France, and yet this one does look like the Battle of France casualty. Any thoughts will be much appreciated. Regards, Sinisa |

I have photos taken on a Belgian airfield during the BofF and 2 of the aircraft have the badge on the nose

Chris, thank you, highly valued. I suspected that there might be a proof for the emblem usage even during the BoF, but had nothing to substantiate it until now.

Re: Bf 109 E-1 - Yellow 8 - II./JG 27
Back in 2008 I purchased a copy of a photo of this aircraft taken from the starboard side. On the back side there was a note which imprinted on the front side as well. I took the negative, cropped it and mirrored it - the result is attached. It reads something like Ch....., but I do not think is Charleville. If someone on the TOCH can decipher it, that will be great.

Re: Bf 109 E-1 - Yellow 8 - II./JG 27
This has long since been settled - the photos show a Bf 109 E-1 from 6./JG 27 that had to belly land near Montmort-Lucy, some 75 kms southsoutheast of Saconin-en-Breuil and 50 kms north of Romilly-sur-Seine. See the corresponding thread on LRG (IIRC) or here at TOCH. It has thus been established that the Gruppe badge of II./JG 27 could already be seen during the French Campaign in June 1940.

Jochen,
Thank you for the clarification. I just do not remember seeing the thread that you are referring to here on the TOCH - I will try to locate it. As for the LRG... I am not member there. Regards, Sinisa |

Re: Bf 109 E-1 - Yellow 8 - II./JG 27
Hello,
One of the most photographed FL Bf109Es of the WC--I have 18 views of this in the EoE photo DB. The two things that we don't know about it are the date (presumably in June, 1940) and the name of the pilot. Can anybody help with these? |

Re: Bf 109 E-1 - Yellow 8 - II./JG 27
Hello Sinisa,
There was another photo (Downloaded in October 2014) of the said machine. Here is its back. Not exactly the same writing but obviously the same meaning. ... Nothing like that in the area except "Champagne" or "Champigneul", i.e. Champigneul-Champagne which is close to Montmort-Lucy. ... I thought it would be very difficult for me to understand a Champagne peasant speaking French in 1940.... I just imagine for a German!.. Left that after that photo, my contacts did confirm it was Montmort-Lucy. Something like a "Gendarmerie" report I guess ... To be followed ... Regards, Franck.
