Metal-Gliders as Gunnerypractice Targets

An ex-RAF F/L told me, that the RAF use in the 50ties small Gliderplanes from Metall, drowend by Tempests as Targets during Air-to-Air Gunnery Practice for Fighter Pilots. How look that Gliders?
