Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a crashed Mitsubishi Ki-46 at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...8AAOSwlhVgBiIr

Is that the emblem of the 38th Dokuritsu Chutai on the tail?.

Clint

It is, also the emblem of the earlier 38th Sentai in the Phillipines and Formosa.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello Nick,

Thanks. Is that just a polite way of telling me its more likely a 38th Sentai machine ? As indeed is the case with 38 Dokuritsu Chutainot emerging from 38 Sentai until 10 July 1945. Given the war ended when it did 38 Sentai is much more likely.

For those not aware of the site there are some nice Ki-46 and Ki-45 profiles at:

Hi Clint. You know I always try to be polite !
I also thought the 38th, before it's re-designation, and the landscape looks more Phillipines than Japan.
Cheers
Nick

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a Mitsubishi Ki-2 at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/zq17-Imperi...cAAOSwjhZgD5C2

Also another couple of photos on the site aucfree at:

https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...4QMyhMegQIARBr

https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...4QMyg_egQIARBP

Several sourcesmention that the Ki-2 aircraft saw out their days as trainers, but I've not seen any particular units referenced in this regard. So is anyone aware of any training unit flying Ki-2 after 07.12.1941?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Looks like a Ki-2-I with s/n (c/n) 30 built in 1934.

Since the last aircraft (Ki-2-II) were built in 1938 pure logic says survivors must have been used for crew/bomber training long into the war years.

Why scrap anything that is still useful?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hi Stig,

Very much my own thinking too. However, it would be nice to have ideally, some photos of Ki-2 from the 1941+ period and some knowledge of which units operated them. It seems that former frontline aircraft of both the JAAF and the JNAF operated subsequently by training units are very poorly covered compared aircraft of a simialar type in other airforces. It would be interesting to know if this is because people used to european alphabets find Japanese publications hard to read or whether the information has not been published in Japanese either.

Clint
