Aluminium-Zinc-Magnesium alloys in german aircraft
Hello
During the war, Germany tried to shift from copper containing duralumin-like alloys to aluminium-zinc-magnesium alloys for aircraft construction. A fair amount of information can be found on the metallurgical side (ie in BIOS report 1770), but, on the aircraft building side, I’ve found only little. The main reference is in Helmut Maier books (“Rüstungsforschung im Nationalsozialismus”, corresponding chapter translated in English in “The Kaiser Wilhelm Society under national socialism”), where it’s stated that 10 Fw 190s where built with that material (see attachment). Another reference can be found in a listing of Bundesarchiv documents, this time for 10 Me 109 G to be built at Wiener-Neustadt (1943). Has anyone heard of these planes, or, more generally, of the usage of this alloy for specific parts ? Many thanks in advance Kind regards Jean |
