Anti-Shipping in the Black Sea

Can anyone point me to some good resources, mainly secondary to begin with, for units involved and operations carried out (success, losses, etc) for anti shipping in the black sea in the later half of 1941.

I have one brief reference in a book to Stab, 1 and 3./KuFlGr 506, 1./106 and Stab/906 along with a few Ju 88s operating over the area from the end of August to the end of September 1941 but then references run out.

Any further help or pointers would be appreciated.

Adam

It gets a cursory mention in my forthcoming book 'Sea Eagles' and is mentioned likewise in the recent book on German torpedo ops by Thiele

Thanks Chris. Actually the Thiele book is where I got the reference from in the first place.

Cheers

Re: Anti-Shipping in the Black Sea

You will find such information in my forthcoming book "Barbarossa: The Air War".

It will be published by Ian Allan in 2007. It's a 100,000-word large format and richly illustrated book.

Re: Anti-Shipping in the Black Sea

6./KG 26 is stationed in Romania for much of the autumn of '41 on anti-shipping operations. Details are in the unit history which title escapes me right now since I'm on Hurricane Katrina relief duties and away from my library.

Re: Anti-Shipping in the Black Sea

Adam,

the Luftwaffe documents contains many anti-shipping actions from 1941. Just two another examples (formerly not mentioned units): the KG 27 flew some anti-shipping sorties and even the JG 77 flew Jagdbomber missions against Soviet ships in harbours.

Re: Not only German units

Durig the war at Black See not only Luftwaffe unit took part in this comabt also in the anti-shiping role were used for example Rumanian Blenheims, which achived some succes against Soviets transport.
Others ARR bombers also took part in action over the harbor.

The effectivness of ARR plane in comparnison with LW was of course far inferior and German crews had bigger inpact on air war over Black See and sinking Soviet warships and ships.
Anyway Rumanian also made many martime sorties versus Soviet navy.
The battle for Odessa in 1941 is quite nice example of such ARR actions over see and harbor

Regards
