Ju-88 lost 31 july 1944
Hello,
Ju-88 1H+JP of 6./KG26 lost on 31 july 1944 ; in Rudi Schmidt's book this plane (crew Uffz Wilhelm Otto, Ogefr Friedrich Maurer, Ogefr Eberhard Schmidt and Fw Helut Budach) is listed as lost during mission over british Channel ; all crew members were POW . Can someone tell me with certitude where this plane was lost, Normandy or Med ? Torpedo-bombers of III/KG26 and III/KG77 operated over Med. during night 31 july to 1 august, so it seems possible, if not probable, that planes of II/KG26 where with them. Thanks in advance. Greetings. Claude |

Re: Ju-88 lost 31 july 1944
Claude, 'K' report 427/1944 gives crash location as '' about a mile off shore, Barfleur Harbour, 30th July 1944 at 2330hrs''.
The report says the aircraft took off at 2100hrs from Montelimar to make a torpedo attack on allied shipping in Barfleur Harbour. Two F.5B torpedos were carried and aircraft were due to return to Dolo-Tavaux after the mission. The aircraft code 1H+IP (in report) hit a ships baloon cable, and the pilot ditched with torpedos still onboard, Regards Brian Bines |
