Smile Gliders lost September 19 1944 over Belgium

Hi ,
The following gliders from the 401GIR/1Bn were lost in Belgium on September 19 1944 :
GC-4A Chalk 10B was lost near Gent , GC-4A 14B was lost 3 km south from Ostend and GC-4A 43-41165 flown by Ed Slawson near Moerbeke . Can someone add some info on these losses.

Regards
Alain

Re: Gliders lost September 19 1944 over Belgium

Gliders and their pilots were USAAF, carried troops were US Army. I think first establish which TCG was towing these gliders with 401st GIR infantry that day and hopefully the relevant TCG or TCS reports of 19 Sep 1944 can shed some more light.

Cynically enough is that when there were no fatalities involved and soldiers were accounted for, not much can be traced about these widely dispersed early landings anymore....

Loading lists were destroyed after six months or so, I once heard.

F/O Edson E. Slawson (1910-2004). T-127010. No MACR filed for him and passengers.

Groet,
Leendert

Re: Gliders lost September 19 1944 over Belgium

Alain,
Perhaps check this website as well what units were transported on what day: https://www.ww2gp.org/serials/hollandSerial.php

If 1/401 GIR on 19 Sep 1944 in your question, then serial A-73 flown by 435th TCG according above list. Losses refer to C-47s, not gliders.

From another source:

Serial A-73 - 435th TCG.
I]"31 aircraft and 30 gliders. 25 gliders released on LZ "W" at 1444. 6 gliders aborted account weather. 3 landed on continent. 2 landed in channel and 1 landed in UK. 1 aircraft failed to return, 2 aircraft damaged by light to medium flak and ground fire. Results successful."
[/i]

Also see, although not the one(s) you're looking for: https://www.hangarflying.eu/erfgoeds...van-waco-cg-4/

In online book Market Garden Then and Now by Karel Magry it says that Waco 43-19872 of Serial A-73 came down near hamlet Asbeek near Asse, "one of three of this serial in Belgium".
However, Joebaugher has this one in 436th TCG on 19 Sep 1944, which would make it Serial A-76...

Groet,
Leendert
