4 FG and 357 FG 5 Mar 44
Can anyone supply me with either the combat reports or mission reports for these 2 units on 5 Mar 44 which claimed an astounding number of Fw 200, Fw 190 and Bf 109s (16 destroyed, one probable, 6 damaged) between 1130 and 1305 hrs over south-west France

This scenario for this date is possible. The book "The 357th Over Europe" by Merle Olmsted gives at pages 36 - 38 for this date the described circumstances Claims and losses. Unfortunately, I have neither accounts for 4th FG nor any Combat or Mission Reports for both Groups that day. Good Luck ! Horst Weber |

Chris,
you have the well known report of Chuck Yeager that he wrote upon his return in England after being shot down on 5 March between Bordeaux and Toulouse; There is also a French Magazine with some mission reports of US pilots the same day. I send you this via PM. Gilles |

Thanks gentlemen. Thanks to Matti, we have identified the Bf 109/Fw 190 losses but the only German claim would appear to have been pyrrhric plus three bombers by JG 2

Chris, if you're interested I know a guy here in Toulouse that found the wreck of Yeager's P-51 (at least his remains). I can gice you his contact.
A part of the finds at the crashplace are in display in the Aeroscopia air museum at Blagnac, near Toulouse. |
