VVS losses over Romania on 25 May and 4 June 1944

Hi all,

In the morning of 25 May 1944, at 7.49 and 7.50, I./JG 52 claimed two Yak 9s in the area of Tiraspol.

On 4 June 1944, between 15.00 and 16.32, JG 52 claimed nine Il-2s and SG 10 three more in the area of Iasi.

Any hint about possible Soviet losses in these actions and units involved would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Boris

Hello Zoran,

Thank you for the data provided. In the meantime I found out that the La 5 was actually from 164 IAP, ml.leit. Ivan Gritsenko being killed. Do you happen to know at least roughly the time when La 5 and Yak 9 were lost?

Best regards,
Boris

Re: VVS losses over Romania on 25 May and 4 June 1944

Hi Boris,
I do not have data for 17 VA at the moment, but there is something for June (from various and unchecked sources).
Soviet units that fought against JG 52, SG 2, SG 10, Romanian Grupul 9 etc. belonged to Soviet 5th and 17th Air Armies.
17th was stationed closer to the Black Sea, while the 5th was northern. During May 1944 Soviet 5th Air Army (5 VA) lost 33 Yaks (Yak-1, -7B, -9D), 12 La-5, 65 P-39, 8 Pe-2 and 28 Il-2.
During period 30.05-8.06.44 Luftwaffe lost up to 30 Bf 109G fighters of JG 52, and attack 30 FW 190, 7 Ju 87D/G and at least 2 Hs 129.
On 3 June 5 VA recorded 26 air battles, and (over)claimed 15 Ju 87, 22 Bf 109, 18 Fw 190 and 1 Hs 129, and lost in air combat 2 Yak-9, 1 P-39 and 1 Il-2, and 1 Il-2 shot down by AA.
On 4 June 5 VA recorded 22 air battles, and claimed 22 Bf 109 and 12 Fw 190 (5 Bf 109 and one Fw 190 by Il-2s) and lost in air combat 1 Yak-9 and 1 Il-2, by AA another 4 Il-2, plus missing 9 Yak-9, 2 Il-2 and 2 P-39.
Of these, 7 air battles with Bf 109s and Fw 190s were fought by 6 and 427 IAPs (both 294 IAD) that escorted Il-2s of 2 ShAK.
Next day, 5 June, at dawn, 11 Il-2s (2 ShAK) and 8 Yak-9s (294 IAD) attacked Großdeutschland divison's possitions and fought with Fw 190s at low altitude (and Yak-9s of 427 IAP shot down 2 Fw 190s, including one allegedly flown by Wolfram von Richthofen). Nine A-20Gs of 453 BAP, 218 BAD, were in that region also, and were attacked by Bf 109s...

5 VA controlled units, V-VI.1944:
2 GvBAK (1 GvBAD, 8 GvBAD, 218 BAD), 1 GvShAK (8 GvShAD, 9 GvShAD, 12 GvIAD), 2 ShAK (7 GvShAD, 231 ShAD), 4 IAK (294 IAD, 302 IAD), 7 IAK (9 GvIAD, 205 IAD, 304 IAD). Direct reporting: 312 NBAD, 511 RAP, 95 TrAP, 714 OAPS, 18 AP GVF. 85 SANAP and 85 KRAE were also under 5 VA during spring 44. 302 IAD soon to be renamed 14 GvIAD, on 2.7.44.

You may check (at pamyat-naroda.ru), for example, 294 IAD documents:
Журналы боевых действий. даты создания документа: с 30.06.1944 по 30.06.1944 г.
Архив: ЦАМО, Фонд: 20511, Опись: 1, Дело: 82, Лист начала документа в деле: 184а

Regards,
Zoran

Re: VVS losses over Romania on 25 May and 4 June 1944

I ran across this Soviet report and checked the German claims but couldn’t check any Romanian claims. Considering it was alleged that Fw 190s made the attack, it appears to be SG 2 but no claims are known. So someone in the future can use this information.

Journal of Combat Operations of the 3 GShAK (TsAMO, F: 20512, O.: 1, D: 87, L. 1a page 8)

2 June 1944
A group of 16 Il-2 from 568 ShAP (231 ShAD) under escort of 10 Yak-9 from 4 IAK made a strike on a column of “enemy” tanks and infantry to the southeast and east of Toteschiy (correct name Totesti, Romania). At 12:05 the Il-2s split into two sub groups with 1st 8 Il-2 led by St. Lt. Lozorenko under cover of 10 Yak-9 on the offensive front of 52nd Army at Toteschiy. At 12:23 struck at 800 m. The 1st section went towards Soviet territory. Ml. Lt. Glanshteyn Il-2 fell in the area of Toteschiy after being attacked by a Fw 190. Kapitan Feoktsistov’s Il-2 on leaving was attacked by Fw 190s at an altitude of 200 m but was able to make it to Erureniy (Epureni, Romania) and made an emergency landing. The report also states two Il-2 from 873 ShAP Lt. Yakovlev and Ml. Lt. Khrushchev were shot down by AAA. Not all such losses claiming the loss to AAA are correct as some damaged fell to fighters.
