Re: Divers discover wreckage of 'Giant' German Luftwaffe transport plane shot down by British fighter while flying from base in Sardinia
joyban - Thanks for posting this . If July 1943 is correct is w.n. 1267 I/TG5 shot down on the 26th July east of Cape Rera(?) a possibility 3 killed and 6 injured.
In 1984 the Daily Mail reported on the meeting between Walter Honig pilot of Me 323 wn 1274 and Gil Graham gunner from the Marauder who shot him down causing a crash-landing on the north coast of Corsica on 30-7-43. Hopefully the Daily Mail has not linked the Honig incident to this new discovery which has come down in the sea, perhaps a werk-nummer will turn up, Regards Brian Bines Last edited by Brian Bines; 22nd September 2012 at 20:54. |

Re: Divers discover wreckage of 'Giant' German Luftwaffe transport plane shot down by British fighter while flying from base in Sardinia
Hello,
The link to the Mail indicates that this Me 323 was shot down by a Beaufighter. So must already be known which Me323 this is as would be the Beaufighter which must have claimed this rare bird ? Ah, I see in Jerry Scutts Beaufighter book(Crowood) page 90 that four Beaufighters of 144 Sqdn shot down six Me 323's on the 26th July 43. One Beaufighter lost.
